A year ago we shared Fantastic Cat’s beautiful debut single Fiona, with the announcement of the New York quartet’s first full-length album, which is now finally available. The band members – Anthony D’Amato, Don DiLego, Brian Dunne, and Mike Montali (Hollis Brown) – all have careers of their own, but together they prove the power of synergy. “Each person in this band has different, complementary strengths as writers and performers,” the musicians explain in an extensive backstory for Atwood Magazine. “The goal of this record was simply to have fun, and not care about the results.” An approach that worked out very well. Based on the album title The Very Best of Fantastic Cat you can conclude that they pulled out all the stops (not only musically, but also in terms of art work and merchandising – check out their Folk Rock for Pussies t-shirt for example), and perhaps we should also fear that there will be no sequel, at least not one that will be just as good. Because good they are, the ten songs here. This is high quality indie folk-rock, with strong lyrics, appealing melodies and goosebumps-inducing vocals. Everything is right, the very best indeed.
The Very Best of Fantastic Cat is out now digitally, on CD and vinyl LP through Blue Rose Music.
