New album: The Mieters || De Ruit Is Uit

Dutch four-piece The Mieters scored a modest cult hit in 2017 about a checkout girl at department store Hema, and their debut full-length album Blits! made it to my year-end list of 2019. Now Michiel Heinicke (guitar), Peter Eijk (bass), Kai Kanters (drums), and Giel Mulder (organ, trombone) are back with their sophomore LP De Ruit Is Uit. They still play catchy Nederbeat with the rough edge of 60s garage rock, but the new songs are more cleverly constructed, more diverse – nice tempo changes, cool harmony vocals, appropriate addition of horns – and have improved vocals. At the same time they are more coherent but just as intense as before – the recording reflects the energy of a live show.

Only 3 percent of our visitors come from the Netherlands, so chances are you won’t understand any of the Dutch lyrics – partly untranslatable, due to local expressions and bygone slang – when you listen to this record. That’s a pity, because it’s very amusing how the daily worries of the band members are expressed. Since the original Nederbeat also enjoyed some international popularity in the 60’s, and this is musically much fun anyway, I don’t want to withhold this release from you. And otherwise there are two great instrumental tracks too.

De Ruit Is Uit is out now digitally and on vinyl LP through Grey Productions.
